The name of the hotel comes from the first settler of the island. Prince Stafilos was the son of Dionysos and Ariadne and the grandson of Minos. His last exploration in the Aegean brought him to the green island of Skopelos. The green paradise enchanted him and so, he decided to live permanently on the island. He built the first settlement in the region of Skopelos and not where he landed, namely in the bay of Stafilos. Prince Stafilos became a hero and is mentioned among the fifty Argonauts who traveled with Jason to Colchis to get the Golden Fleece. In 1936 the archaeologist N. Platonas brought to light the findings of a Minoan tomb, which was attributed to Stafilos. Among his rich gifts was found a sword with a golden handle, which is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Athens.
